Iron Infusion

The most common way to treat iron deficiency is to take iron by mouth as a tablet or liquid.  This works well for most people and is usually tried first.  Some people may need iron to be given straight into the body through a vein.  This is called an intravenous (IV) iron infusion.  The iron is given through a needle and dripped (infused) into your vein.  Sometimes 2 iron infusions (given at least 1 week apart) are needed to fully top up iron stores.  The infusion is made up of iron, not blood.

IV iron may be needed if you:

  • Are not able to take iron tablets/liquid
  • Are not responding to iron tablets/liquid or not absorbing them
  • Need to get iron levels up quickly ie prior to major surgery, late pregnancy or to avoid blood transfusion
  • If you have chronic kidney disease or chronic heart failure

Aclasta Infusion

South Coast Medical provides an infusion service for both current and new patients to the clinic.  An Aclasta (Zoledronic Acid) is a once yearly procedure for administering medication prescribed by your GP or specialist.  The intravenous infusion is provided for the treatment of osteoporosis that helps to strengthen your bones and provide protection from fractures.

Who May Benefit From Aclasta?

Aclasta infusions are commonly recommended for patients with:

  • Osteoporosis (postmenopausal, age-related or due to steroid use)
  • A history of fragility fractures
  • Low bone mineral density
  • Paget’s disease of bone (as directed by a specialist)

Your GP or specialist will determine whether Aclasta is suitable based on your medical history and recent blood tests.

What to Expect During Your Appointment

  1. Pre-infusion assessment — Review of medical history, recent blood work (including kidney function, vitamin D and calcium levels) and any previous treatments.
  2. The infusion  — Aclasta is given through a IV drip over approximately 15–20 minutes.
  3. Monitoring — Our nursing team observes you during and immediately after the infusion to ensure you are comfortable and safe.
  4. Aftercare guidance — We provide advice on hydration, symptom monitoring, and when to contact your healthcare provider.

How to Prepare

  • Hydrate well the day before and the day of your appointment unless advised otherwise.
  • Eat normally prior to the infusion.
  • Bring the medication with you on the day of your infusion.
  • Ensure recent blood tests (usually within the last few weeks) are available for review.
  • Let us know if you are feeling unwell, have had recent surgery, or are taking new medications.

Possible Side Effects

Many patients tolerate Aclasta well. Some may experience flu-like symptoms such as muscle aches, fever, or fatigue within the first 1–3 days. These are usually mild and temporary. Our team will provide guidance on managing these symptoms and when to seek medical advice.
