ADHD Assessments, Diagnosis and Treatment Available

Dr Ciara Flynn ADHD AssessmentsAppointments available with Dr Ciara Flynn at the Rye clinic

GP-led ADHD assessment, diagnosis and ongoing care for children aged 6 and over, adolescents and adults — at South Coast Medical.

ADHD can affect education, work, relationships, confidence and everyday functioning. Whether you are looking for answers for yourself or for your child, our GP ADHD clinic offers a thorough, respectful and evidence-based pathway — from assessment and diagnosis through to treatment and ongoing care.

Appointments are with Dr. Ciara Flynn a certified Victorian ADHD practitioner.

You do not need a referral — you can book yourself in.

A diagnosis is only the beginning, and continuity matters for what comes after it, Dr. Flynn will provide a written treatment instruction for your ongoing care to share with your usual GP after your management has been established.

Dr Ciara Flynn is an experienced General Practitioner with a special interest in ADHD and mental health.

She has experience caring for patients with co-occurring autism and ADHD (AuDHD), and works collaboratively with psychologists, psychiatrists, schools and allied health professionals when appropriate.

Dr. Flynn was selected to take part in the RACGP Victorian GP ADHD Training and Support Program, developed to provide GPs with expert training in ADHD assessment, diagnosis and management.

Her interest in ADHD grew out of seeing the difference that accurate diagnosis, appropriate treatment and ongoing care can make across education, employment, relationships and everyday life.

Why a GP-led ADHD clinic?

ADHD often occurs alongside anxiety, depression, sleep difficulties, autism, chronic medical conditions or other health concerns that can influence treatment. As a General Practitioner, Dr Flynn can see you in your local community and consider ADHD in the context of your overall health rather than in isolation.

Care may include:

• ADHD assessment and diagnosis

• Medication initiation where appropriate

• Medication titration and optimisation

• Monitoring treatment response and side effects

• Cardiovascular and physical health monitoring

• Management of co-existing medical and mental health conditions

• Coordination with psychologists, psychiatrists and other healthcare professionals

• Preventative healthcare alongside ADHD treatment

• Managing menopause and hormonal impacts on ADHD

Where specialist input is clinically indicated, referral to a paediatrician or psychiatrist may be recommended.

Who we can assess?

Dr. Ciara Flynn provides ADHD assessment, diagnosis and treatment initiation for:

• Children aged 6 years and older

• Adolescents

• Adults

Assessment is conducted in accordance with current Australian clinical and regulatory requirements. Some patients may benefit from additional specialist assessment, or from shared care with a paediatrician or psychiatrist.

The assessment process

Every ADHD assessment is personally completed by Dr Flynn. Assessment is not delegated, which keeps the process consistent and builds a detailed understanding of your history, symptoms and goals.

Step 01

Initial consultation

20 minutes · $132.90 out of pocket cost

This determines whether a comprehensive ADHD assessment is appropriate.

• Discuss your concerns and symptoms

• Review relevant medical, developmental and mental health history

• Explore the impact of symptoms on everyday functioning

• Determine whether further assessment is appropriate

• Explain the assessment process, timeframes and fees

Step 02

Comprehensive ADHD assessment

40 minutes · $271.65 out of pocket cost

A detailed clinical assessment covering:

• Developmental history

• Medical and mental health history

• Family history

• Assessment against DSM-5 diagnostic criteria

• Screening for conditions that may mimic or co-exist with ADHD

Step 03

Diagnostic consultation

40 minutes · $291.65 out of pocket cost

During this consultation:

• Assessment findings are reviewed prior to the appointment

• DSM-5 diagnostic criteria are discussed

• Alternative or additional diagnoses are considered

• Treatment options are discussed

• An individual management plan is developed

• Prescribing is commenced where medication is recommended

Supporting information may include parent or teacher questionnaires, school reports, psychology reports, previous paediatrician or psychiatrist correspondence, and occupational therapy or speech pathology reports. Supporting documentation is reviewed before the diagnostic (3rd) consultation.

Ongoing ADHD care

A diagnosis is only the beginning. Ongoing care may include medication initiation where appropriate, dose optimisation and titration, monitoring of treatment response and side effects, repeat prescriptions, regular clinical review, and coordination with psychologists, psychiatrists, schools and allied health professionals.

During the early stages of treatment, patients may require review every 4 to 6 weeks. Once treatment is stable, a written treatment instruction is provided for ongoing repeat prescriptions from your own GP if treatment has been commenced.

Already diagnosed with ADHD?

If you have previously been diagnosed by a paediatrician or psychiatrist, you may not need another full assessment. Dr. Flynn can review your previous assessment and, where clinically appropriate, continue your ADHD care or provide an ongoing written treatment instruction. Please book a 20 minute initial ADHD appointment only if this is your circumstance.

Dr. Flynn's approach

Every person brings different strengths, challenges, experiences and goals, and no single treatment approach suits everyone.

Good ADHD care begins with careful assessment, accurate diagnosis and clear communication. Treatment is then tailored to the individual and reviewed as circumstances change. My aim is accessible, personalised ADHD care that considers the whole person rather than the diagnosis alone, working alongside other healthcare professionals when that helps.

What to bring

Where available, please bring:

• Previous psychologist, psychiatrist or paediatrician reports

• Previous ADHD assessments

• School reports

• Parent or teacher questionnaires, if you have been asked to complete them

• Occupational therapy or speech pathology reports

• Your current medication list

• Relevant medical records

Providing this information before the diagnostic consultation allows enough time for it to be reviewed properly.

Frequently Asked Questions

What ages does the ADHD clinic assess?

Dr Flynn provides ADHD assessment, diagnosis and treatment initiation for children aged 6 years and older, adolescents and adults. Some patients may benefit from specialist assessment or shared care with a paediatrician or psychiatrist.

How much does an ADHD assessment cost?

The pathway has three appointments: a 20-minute initial consultation is $220 (with a $87.10 medicare rebate), a 40-minute comprehensive ADHD assessment at $400 (with $128.35 medicare rebate) , and a 40-minute diagnostic consultation (with additional out of consultation administration time) at $420 (with $128.35 medicare rebate) . Medicare rebates apply where eligible. Additional review appointments may occasionally be required where further assessment or supporting information is clinically necessary. The fees cover additional time Dr. Flynn will spend outside of consultation time reviewing questionnaires and completing the legally required documentation for ADHD assessments.

Can Dr Flynn diagnose ADHD and prescribe medication?

Yes. Following a comprehensive clinical assessment, Dr Flynn can assess, diagnose, initiate treatment and provide ongoing ADHD care in accordance with current Australian requirements. Where specialist input is clinically indicated, referral to a paediatrician or psychiatrist may be recommended.

I have already been diagnosed with ADHD. Can you continue my care?

In many cases, yes. If you were previously diagnosed by a paediatrician or psychiatrist you may not need another full assessment. Dr Flynn can review your previous assessment and, where clinically appropriate, continue your ADHD care — medication review and optimisation, ongoing monitoring, repeat prescriptions, regular follow-up and coordination with your existing healthcare team.

Will everyone assessed be diagnosed with ADHD?

No. Assessment provides an independent medical opinion based on your clinical history and current diagnostic criteria. Some patients receive an alternative diagnosis, and some require further assessment. Assessment fees cover the professional assessment process and clinical expertise provided; they do not guarantee an ADHD diagnosis or a prescription.

Can I keep seeing my regular GP?

Yes. Most patients continue seeing their usual GP for general healthcare while attending the ADHD clinic specifically for ADHD assessment and management. Collaborative care is encouraged where appropriate.

Which clinic is the ADHD clinic at?

South Coast Medical Rye

How often will I be reviewed after starting ADHD medication?

During the early stages of treatment, patients are generally reviewed every 4 to 6 weeks so the dose can be optimised and response and side effects monitored. Once treatment is stable, reviews may occur less frequently according to clinical need.

What should I bring to my ADHD appointment?

Where available, bring previous psychologist, psychiatrist or paediatrician reports, previous ADHD assessments, school reports, any parent or teacher questionnaires you have been asked to complete, occupational therapy or speech pathology reports, your current medication list and relevant medical records. Providing these before the diagnostic consultation allows enough time for review.

Do you assess autism as well as ADHD?

The clinic assesses ADHD. Dr Flynn has experience caring for patients with co-occurring autism and ADHD (AuDHD) and works collaboratively with psychologists, psychiatrists, schools and allied health professionals when appropriate.
