What is Achilles Tendinopathy?

It was once famed for being the downfall of the half-god Achilles, but now everyone recognises their Achilles as the thing that causes them pain and stiffness at the back of their heel day after day. If you have been experiencing pain just above your heel bone for longer than a few weeks, then this post is for you!

Whenever we move or exercise our muscles and tendons are constantly healing and repairing themselves. But what would happen if this healing response failed? This is when we can end up with a painful condition known as Achilles Tendinopathy which can affect people of all age groups and fitness levels.

Achilles tendinopathy can last for months or even years if left untreated becoming more and more painful and stiff until eventually, you are not able to participate in the things you want to do.

Treatment

So what can we do to address this painful condition? If you have only been experiencing symptoms for a few weeks the best management is to try and reduce painful activities such as walking, running or jumping or try gel inserts in the back of your shoes until your symptoms settle. If you have been in pain for more than a few weeks then you may require advice and rehabilitation to return the Achilles to its former glory. The allied health team at South Coast Medical offers up to date management and advice to get you back in control of your ‘Achilles Heel’.
